Member Alert: Your Calls Needed - Congress Set to Vote on Spending Bill
KCA received word that Congress has issued a spending billto keep the government running through the end of the year. This vote could come very quickly. Included in this bill is language that would shut down COOL, CHECKOFF REFORM, HORSE PROCESSING and implementation of the GIPSA rules.
COOL - This Omnibus bill demands that the Secretary of Agriculture, with consultation from the U.S. Trade Representative, submit recommendations to Congress to change the COOL law.
CHECKOFF - This Omnibus bill prohibits USDA from implementing any beef checkoff reform.
HORSE PROCESSING - The Omnibus bill prohibits the humane processing of horses within the United States.
GIPSA RULES- This Omnibus bill prohibits USDA from implementing needed GIPSA reforms.
KCA has producer directed policy of each of the above mentioned issues and supports COOL and the promotion of USA beef. KCA supports reforming the beef checkoff system to ensure that your checkoff assessments are not used by any lobbying group to work against you. KCA supports thehumane movement and slaughter of horses within the boundaries of the USA, and KCA supports the strict enforcement of the Packers and Stockyards Act of 1921, which GIPSA reforms will provide.
Please call both senators and your representative to ask them to oppose the inclusion of any language referencingCOOL, BEEF CHECKOFF, HORSE PROCESSING, or GIPSA.
KCA has already contacted the Kansas delegation, but they all need to hear from you.
